Questions of Communication
Internet protocols (IP) are changing the way businesses communicate across the globe. This change can be seen in how companies do business across a variety of industries. IP has already been adopted by many UK companies, and is on the verge of replacing PSTN across Europe. The security industry has been slow to embrace this new technology, but the not-too-distant future may see a time when PSTN networks are just not an option. Therefore, security companies must accept the change, and use the new technology to its fullest advantage.
There have, however, been concerns about the change to IP, mainly centring on incorporating information technology into existing systems. While IT provides added security and reliability, many companies perceive the integration process as complicated and stressful. Listening to these customer concerns, Bold Communications led the field, developing new strategies, reflective of its commitment to IP signalling, and to providing the benefits of IP to its customers.
Highlighting Bold’s commitment to IP is the recent advent of the BoldNet RX alarm communications product, which harnesses the latest, widely available, communications technology. Bold developed the IP-based product in partnership with Honeywell, for use with the Honeywell Galaxy Ethernet communicator. The BoldNet RX is designed to receive alarm signalling from the Galaxy 8-512 & G3 ranges of control panels, over an IP network. End-users can now save time and money as the BoldNet RX can be customised to fit with any existing network security. Costs are also reduced asthe use of a Broadband connection means “free” alarm signalling, with no extra line rental costs, no extra network charges and no extra telephone charges. This reduction in costs does not compromise security in any way. System status assurance can be given for a far longer period than existing systems allow, data is encrypted to the highest level, and line faults are detected quickly, ensuring the benefits of IP outweigh any cost or stress involved in the change.
Offering a complete IP solution, MiniBold IP-based alarm management software offers the option of remote support, is familiar to anyone who has ever used Windows-based products and the ease with which it is used results in reduced operator training time. P&R Fire and Security Ltd recognised Bold’s commitment to IP and incorporated MiniBold alarm monitoring software into their ARC, enabling P&R to provide integrated IP solutions. Paul Bromley, Technical Director at P&R said, “[we] chose MiniBold for its ease of use and proven reliability. I would not have recommended the purchase of the MiniBold system if Bold didn’t have an IP vision for the future; we were very impressed with the MiniBold team from Bold communications”.
Bold’s managing director, Brian Kelly believes “The key to Bold’s success is developing new software in a way which is considerate for the end-user yet still retains high levels of functionality. IP solutions are the way forward as we strive to achieve this aim”.
